arcade fire - suburban war

on first listen, my reaction to the Arcade Fire’s new release The Suburbs was, wow, this album is long. unnecessarily long. yet the more i listen to it, the more vital each track becomes.

by the time the album reaches this particular track, the guitar riff heralds some sort of culmination of tension. the first two-thirds of the track is the calm before the storm, running away from the past, the disillusionment, the complacency of suburban life. the final breakdown could easily have devolved into something bombastic and over-the-top, but the unison singing and violin continuo keep it firmly grounded. the subtle speeding up of the guitar riff paired with the steady bass drum kicks lend it a sense of urgency, mimicking the sound of running, of a need for speed and escape.

it kills me how beautiful this song is.

now the cities we live in could be distant stars
and i search for you in every passing car
